An exciting blend of dance, art and original music

About the Project

On May 17-20, 2018, RTMD will perform a full-length dance concert, enter the circle. First on the program will be to gaze, which examines the influence of light on our lives. The limitless possibilities of friendship are the focus of enter the circle. Water Passion explores the beauty of water and the way in which it accompanies our lives.  Original music by composer, cellist and vocalist Robert Een will be performed live.

Throughout its history, RTMD Board members and dancers have agreed that maintaining a small, well regarded, and influential dance company with extensive educational components for multigenerational as well as non-traditional participants, is the best way to broaden the audience for modern dance and expand community horizons. RTMD defines artistic quality based on innovation, excellence in training, and execution of performance. This year is no exception!

RTMD dancers master a unique dance style created and refined by Amy Gately; the style is classical and sculptural in nature and melds with other art forms. As a result, RTMD performances are typically based in or reflective of some non-dance work, whether a novel, short story, poem, painting or sculpture. The choreography seeks to make the work accessible to the audience in a different way.  A unique aspect of RTMD, and one of its distinct benefits to the City of Atlanta, is the opportunities it provides to integrate works across the spectrum of artistic forms, generating thought-provoking, challenging performances for artists and audiences alike.

The primary shaper of RTMD artistic vision is our Director, Amy Gately, who earned a B.A. and M.A. in Dance Education from New York University and taught at that institution. Ms. Gately founded Callanwolde's dance program in 1985 and was Co-Director of the Callanwolde Dance Ensemble until 2005. Since then she has headed outreach programs for the Atlanta Ballet at both the West End and the South Fulton Performing Arts Centers.  Ms. Gately received an Emmy Award for her role in creating an award-winning story “Two Left Feet,” produced by TBS.

Robert Een, composer, singer, cellist, and performing artist, is the recipient of an Obie Award for music composition and two New York Dance and Performance “Bessie” Awards for music composition and sustained achievement. He is known for unique orchestrations and use of extended techniques for voice and cello. Mr. Een composes for film, theater, dance and the concert stage and has recorded sixteen albums of genre-defying original music.
